DJ scratch TURNTABLE help?

What’s more useful: a DJ mixer or a DJ controller? What’s the difference between a DJ mixer & controller?

Me and a few of my friends are interested in DJing, but we need to know if it’s more efficient to buy a DJ mixer or a DJ controller. But what’s the difference between the two?
